He served as the Director of the Delhi Zoological Park and as the Chief Wildlife Warden of Rajasthan, earning national recognition for his lifelong dedication to wildlife conservation. Widely celebrated as “The Tiger Man of India,” he played a pioneering role in safeguarding the country’s tiger population.
# Milestones
In 1973, he became the first Director of Project Tiger, a landmark conservation initiative launched by the Government of India to protect and revive India’s dwindling tiger population. His visionary leadership laid the foundation for one of the most successful wildlife conservation programmes in the world.
Continuing his mission beyond government service, he founded the Tiger Trust in 1989, further strengthening efforts toward tiger conservation and environmental awareness.
After his passing, his son, Pradeep Sankhala, carried forward his father’s legacy by taking charge of the Tiger Trust, and thereafter, Ms. Gosain took over ensuring that the commitment to protecting India’s wildlife endures for future generations.
